Just For Today

Just For Today

By Gail Juliano

“Just for Today, Be Grateful for Every Living Thing.” In Reiki teachings, this is the fifth and final Reiki precept. Contained in this simple statement are three separate ideas: 1) Just for today, 2) be grateful 3) for every living thing.

“Just for Today…” Each Reiki precept begins with these words. And with these three words alone, you can find deep healing. You can do anything for just a day. Alcoholics Anonymous and the other Anonymous 12-step programs work well because of this one-day-at-a-time concept. But, it also and even more deeply contains the concept of “being in the NOW.” It helps you to remember, that the past is gone. It only exists in your mind. The future has not arrived. It too, exists only in your mind. Now is really the only place where you can truly live in peace and harmony. No past; no anger, guilt, resentment. No future; no fear, anxiety, manipulation.

“Be Grateful.” Not only is this precept older than the hills of Japan, but it has been carried forward as one of the great inner peace strategies through all time. In the recent movie, The Secret, the story is told of the gratitude rock that healed a young African child and helped a village to create greater financial prosperity for itself. Combining the Now and Gratitude, you can be grateful for the home you live in; or that you have a bus pass in your pocket and that the sun is shining; or that you have your breath and good health; or you’re your children are amazing and wonderful; or that you have a job that carries you through the week; or that you just received the most amazing phone call of your life!

“For Every Living Thing.” This is probably the most difficult, yet necessary piece of this gratitude precept. Look for the good in all people and in all situations. The wonderful Masehide quote, “The barn’s burnt down. Now I can see the moon!” is an incredible motto to live by. When you meet adversity or challenge, always ask yourself, “What is the benefit in this? How can I use this or what can I learn from this?” If you ask these empowering questions, an answer will come and you can feel the gratitude. If, for example, you find yourself without a car for a few weeks, you might consider the benefits of walking and exercising; of getting to know your immediate neighborhood; of having to loosen up your pride enough to ask for help, giving others an opportunity to do good in helping you. There’s no new way to say this: When you look at the half-full glass, more comes to you. When you focus on the fact that it’s half gone, soon it will be all gone.

So, what are three simple practical things you can do, even just today, and one day at a time from now on?

1) Get a gratitude rock to keep in your pocket. Each time you touch it, think of something for which you’re grateful.
2) Before going to sleep tonight, write a list of three things you were grateful for today.
3) Take a few minutes, as many times as you can remember today, to sit quietly for a minute or two. Say to yourself, “The past is gone…. The future is not here… but, I am here now.” Feel the slight shift as you say it. Simply watch your breathing for a moment or two.

Your life can change on this dime!
