I Can Do This
I Can Do This

What would you do right now, if you did not have any fears? Would you dance, sing, joyfully watch the sunrise?
How often does fear stop you, even before you have started properly. This can happen when you are planning something small, such as a trip to a picnic spot. How often do you end up not going because you think it’s going to rain? Or because you don’t have enough food for picnic goodies, no decent blanket etc. And then it ends up being wonderful weather, you stumble across that old blanket you always used for picnics and you could have picked up a pizza on the way!
What about a major event. Does fear stop you from reprimanding your abusive boss, reporting him to a superior manager, resigning and finding another job? Do you sit behind your desk day after day, gritting your teeth and putting up with him or her screaming at you, calling you names, threatening to fire you etc.?
I have a friend who put up working at a company where she was not appreciated for her skills. The professional partners hinted that her retirement age was coming up. She was so stressed that she might get fired or retrenched that she was a nervous wreck and it made her ill. The doctors could not work out what was causing her blinding headaches, they hospitalised her. Then shortly after she was discharged from hospital because they couldn’t actually work out what was wrong, her company insisted she came into the office to work. And although in the ten years she had worked there she had barely taken sick leave, they took off pay because she, in that year due to her headaches, she had been ill more than the allowed days.
That was the last straw and she resigned. After a few weeks when she had left, her ex boss contacted her saying that her replacement had not been able to cope. Could she please come back and help out. Now she has negotiated a deal where she gets paid the same amount of money for half the amount of hours of work. By conquering her fears, she was in a far more powerful position to negotiate a better deal.
I don’t think we are ever in a position where we conquer all of our fears. The most obviously courageous people such as the Mt Everest climbers, the blind pilot who has just completed a trip around the globe, the lonely yachtsman, Roger Federer serving for the match. They all have the same amount of fear that we ordinary people have. They have just worked out their particular effective way of dealing with it. Some people pray to their god, others pump themselves up with talk, others again touch a good luck charm, kiss the ground or whatever works for them. You will work out your own solution.
Just remember that fear will grab hold of you. Whether you allow it to feel at home and settle in, is up to you. And if you can fight it off, you will find your life is rich with experiences beyond your wildest dreams. If you allow that fear to stop you in your tracks, you might as well pick out your coffin. It’s the same, you are dead and closed off to life. What is it going to be then?
